Avoidance

I'm reading an awesome book, called "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver.  In brief, the author, her husband and two daughters move from Arizona to a farm in Virginia with a commitment to eat only food that they grow or that they can source locally.

I can hear you now..."Really?  An awesome book about growing and eating food?  Was it more exciting than the washing machine manual?"

Trust me.  Ms. Kingsolver writes so descriptively about good food, that I could taste tomatoes and asparagus right from the page.  She has a great sense of humour.   The book also contains a lot of facts about the impact of mass-produced, widely transported food on our society and our environment.  It's an informative book that is a pleasure to read.

She's made me think about food in a whole new light.  I have never been so excited about the prospect of finding locally grown asparagus at the opening of the local Farmer's Market on Saturday.

In the morning, I made pancakes using my own farm eggs, and topped them with locally-produced maple syrup.  I vowed to do more of this.

I've been avoiding lots of paperwork for the past few months.  Alpaca registry business, yarn sales business, and farm business.  The one that is making me lose sleep at night is my farm income tax return.  Every year, I vow to do better.   But I've been really, really busy.

So...I had the whole morning to myself and a todo list that included...registry paperwork and income taxes.

I did start.
But...then I remembered that sandal wearing season was upon us!

Avoidance never looked so pretty!

I loved that book. It gave me all kinds of ideas about what to eat, and all kinds of guilt for what I bought at the grocery store. My garden got considerably bigger when I finished the book.

Hi Norma ~ I read a lot of books and articles on local foods/farming, etc and strive to eat as much locally produced food as we can. I'm going to see if my local library has this book. Love the red toenail polish ~ I do the exact same thing every summer! For my taxes, I usually file for an extension! LOL. Have a great day!

Hey Norma...got any cucumbers??? :~)
Sounds like a great read...I find books written by "real" people are often some of the most interesting books...regardless of the topic.

I hear you about the tax thing...I've got a stack of papers under my desk waiting for my attention, I'm about half way through...notice I said under my desk!

Love the toe nails...seriously, us ladies have to take care of the important things!!!

Cross your fingers for no rain tomorrow!
Have a great weekend...
Cheers

LOL this was a great post, I love those moments when the workload is piling up and you remember the really important stuff, like painting your toes :) I do the same thing.

I love that book, I've read most of her books, I enjoy her style of writing a lot. I'm glad you are enjoying it :)

Good luck with all that paperwork!

Mona - I don't think we can get extensions on our income tax up here in Canada. I find being really quiet and praying works sometimes. Otherwise, when the taxman cometh, I'll flash my little piggies and hope he is sufficiently impressed.

Bug'sMommy, Heather and luckybunny - thanks for dropping in.

Why do today what can be done tomorrow? Isn't that how that saying goes?
Great color on those toes!

This sounds like a good read. Will have to check out the library. We try to eat local food as much as possible and have good sources of eggs and meat. You're way ahead of me with a spring debut of toes ;)
